What is Galen Myotherapy?

Galen myotherapy is a massage and exercise rehabilitation therapy,  improving joint and muscle/tissue health and myofascial release. It is  hands on and is a targeted canine massage technique which helps to  correct the muscles and joints, releasing pain and discomfort. The massage manipulates the surrounding tissue to improve the tissue integrity through creating positive physiological and bio/neurochemical change.  Being hands on allows us to feel the dogs muscle tone, if there is hypotension or hypertension, temperature and reactions.

Positive PACT allows for the dog to have a choice

Some reasons why your dog would have myotherapy

  • Changes in the dog’s personality and behaviour – lack of energy, sleeping more, not wanting to go out, lack of appetite
  • Muscular trauma
  • Limping
  • Joint pain/arthritis/osteoarthritis
  • Stiff when getting up from laying down – mobility issues
  • Ligament of tendon issues
  • Post operative care
  • Unbalanced posture
  • Carpal hyperextension
  • Luxating patella
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplacia
  • Repetitive strain injury

There is a strong link between the dog’s behaviour and pain or discomfort it is feeling.

Initial consultation

Myotherapy requires Vet consent.

I travel to the clients home as this allows the dog to be comfortable in their own environment, reducing stress and anxiety. I will firstly complete a 360 assessment and full observation of the dog, laying, sitting and moving, balance and symmetry, the gait when walking and standing, any areas of tension and any joint issues. I will then talk through and ask the handler to complete a questionnaire regarding the dog’s personality as well as the dogs movements, habits and eating requirements.  The assessment allows for a targeted approach for the massage and I like to work along side the owners, vets and other therapists to gain  the best outcome for the dogs emotional and physical wellbeing.  Once I have received the vet consent and I have assessed the dog we can then organise an appointment for the first treatment.  Please be aware Galen Myotherapy is positive PACT, allowing the treatment to be choice led by the dog, the treatment is undertaken in their home, on  their bed or blanket and at their pace with no restraint or force.
